HDO launches a new project on Community Advocacy to Combat Human Trafficking in Sri Lanka 


The critical economic, food crisis and political instability since 2021 and impact of Covid, in Sri Lanka, accelerated trafficking in persons in the context of sexual exploitation, forced labor, forced marriages among migrant women workers and girls. The migrant domestic workers, a majority of who are women, constitute a large proportion of today's migrant women worker population of Sri Lanka, primarily focusing the Middle Eastern region for employment. 

In this context, this project will be implemented by Human Development Organization in Karaithevu Divisional Secretariat (DS), Kalmunai DS, Ninthavur DS areas of Ampara District, of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.

The Overall Objective of the project is to contribute to combat trafficking in human beings in Ampara District of Eastern province of Sri Lanka by victim centered approach through prevention, protection and prosecution strategies.

This action will be implemented with the following activities and the process; 

(a)   Raising Awareness and Education 

(b)   Strengthen the capacity of duty bearers and key community leaders including social & human right activists, women leaders, health care professionals etc.

(c)   Conducting a situation assessment study on the prevalence and patterns of human trafficking in the target area. 

(d)   Lobbing for stronger governance and policies

(e)   Initiating collective action among CSOs.
